12 Pregnant Girls Write Bece In Bolgatanga Municipal
Twelve girls are confirmed pregnant and taking part in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Bolgatanga Municipality in the Upper East Region.
Mr Elvis Apam, the Bolgatanga Municipal Examinations Officer, who made this known through the Ghana News Agency, explained that the number comprised those whose pregnancies were visible.
The Exams Officer disclosed that on the first day of the exercise, provisional figures indicated that 32 registered candidates, including 22 girls and 10 boys were absent.
Even though no specific reason was given for their inability to turn up for the exercise, Mr Apam, said it was suspected that majority of the girls who were absent were pregnant, while some of the boys travelled outside the Municipality.
Mr Apam explained that there were few instances where some of the invigilators flouted the directive not to take mobile phones with them during invigilation, and said apart from those instances, the exercise got a smooth start across all the nine centres in the Municipality.
He said measures were being taken to address the issue and admonished all supervisors to ensure that their invigilators complied with the directives of the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC).
The Bolgatanga Municipality, presented a total of 2743 candidates, comprising 1215 males and 1528 females from 62 schools this year.
The schools include 45 public and 17 private.
