Meet Raye – The Ghanaian Singer Who Wrote “Bigger”, The First Song On Beyonce’s Forthcoming Album “The Lion King”

It was all joy in Ghana yesterday as Beyonce announced the tracklist for her upcoming album “The Lion King: The Gift” which features Ghana’s reggae-dancehall heavyweight Shatta Wale. Ghana’s music producer Guiltybeatz had production credits on three of the songs on the album.

Another talented Ghanaian has also been discovered on Beyonce’s much-anticipated album. She goes by the name Raye.

Raye, born Rachel Keen – is a Ghanaian singer-songwriter who is based in the UK. She wrote the first song, “Bigger” on the Beyonce “The Lion King: The Gift” album.

The 21-year-old had earlier featured on Jonas Blue’s 2016 single “By Your Side” and Jax Jones’ 2016 single “You Don’t Know Me“, which peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart.

In a recent Instagram post, Raye revealed how she felt when Beyonce told her the song she wrote was track 1 on the Lion King album.

She wrote:

“The moment @beyonce told me the song I wrote was track 1 on the album”.

Who is Raye?

She was born on 24 October 1997 in Tooting, London to a Ghanaian-Swiss mother and an English father.

She studied at Woodcote High School before being accepted to attend the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology for two years before dropping out after she felt “confined…despite learning an extensive amount.

On 11 December 2014, Raye released her debut extended play Welcome to the Winter. She later released her single “Flowers” on 7 February 2015 and on 28 April 2015, she released the single “Alien

Raye was featured alongside Starrah on the track “Dreamer” from Charli XCX’s Number 1 Angel mixtape, which was released on 10 March 2017.

On 3 November 2017, Raye released ‘Decline’ featuring Mr Eazi, which peaked at Number 15 on the UK Chart and has been certified Gold in the same country.

Recently, Raye was featured on King Promise’s debut album ‘As Promise’, specifically on the track, Odo.

‘The Lion King: The Gift’ Album was produced by Beyonce for the 2019 Walt Disney Pictures film The Lion King.
