2024 Polls: Don’t deploy military to polling stations – Mahama
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has emphasized the urgent need for justice and impartiality as Ghana approaches the December 7 general elections.
Speaking at the launch of the National Peace Campaign, Mahama urged for rigorous and fair enforcement of laws to deter anyone who might incite violence or disrupt the electoral process.
He stressed the crucial roles of the Electoral Commission, judiciary, and security agencies in ensuring a peaceful, transparent, and fair election.
Expressing concern over the risk of election-related violence, Mahama urged these institutions to prioritize neutrality and justice. “Individuals attempting to disrupt the electoral process must be held accountable,” he asserted.
He also criticized the potential deployment of military personnel or armed national security operatives to polling stations, arguing that it could create an atmosphere of intimidation for voters.
Mahama called on the government to respect the distinct roles of each security institution to avoid unnecessary tensions. He emphasized that the Electoral Commission’s neutrality is vital for fostering public trust, as impartiality is essential for voter confidence.
Additionally, Mahama highlighted the importance of an unbiased judiciary to resolve any electoral disputes fairly. “Our clergy, like all citizens, should be able to witness voting and counting peacefully, without fear of violence.
Anyone who disrupts the election must face justice,” he stated. He further stressed that the government has a duty to hold accountable those masquerading as state security operatives to undermine the electoral process.
“No weapons should be allowed near polling stations or collation centers,” Mahama insisted. He reiterated, “Election security falls under the Ghana Police Service, led by the Inspector General of Police. Therefore, no military or armed national security operatives should be deployed to polling stations or collation centers.”
Mahama concluded by urging the Electoral Commission to remain impartial and the judiciary to be fair and neutral in the event of any disputes.
