Twelve persons have died, and 44 others have been injured following a fatal road traffic accident involving three vehicles at Konongo Anglican Basic School in the Ashanti Region, the Ghana National Fire Service has confirmed.
The incident occurred in the early hours of July 16, involving a Tata passenger bus, a DAF cargo truck transporting tomatoes, and an empty fuel tanker.
According to the GNFS, preliminary investigations indicate that the DAF cargo truck, travelling from Kumasi towards Accra, attempted to overtake another vehicle on a slope and lost control, colliding head-on with the Tata passenger bus travelling from Accra towards Bole.
The empty fuel tanker subsequently ran into the accident scene but did not significantly contribute to the casualties.
The accident resulted in 12 fatalities, comprising nine males and three females. Forty-four persons were injured, of whom 30 sustained critical injuries.
The injured victims were conveyed to the Asante Akyem Government Hospital, which received 32 casualties, and the Steward Hospital, which received 12 casualties.
The Ghana National Fire Service, together with other emergency response agencies, carried out rescue operations, extricated trapped victims, and ensured the scene was secured to facilitate the safe evacuation of casualties and restoration of traffic flow.
