Ghana Armed Forces deploy personnel to support police in election security

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has deployed personnel to strategic locations to support the Ghana Police Service (GPS) in election security as part of efforts to ensure the peaceful conduct of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana.

In a statement issued Friday (Dec 6) and signed by the Director General of Public Relations, Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, the GAF described the deployment as part of its efforts to facilitate a smooth and secure electoral process.

The public has, therefore, been assured that there was no need to panic if they observed military personnel moving within their localities.

The statement emphasised that the personnel would not be stationed at polling stations.

“Their role will be limited to providing standby support, with the primary responsibility for election security remaining under the Ghana Police Service. The military will only be called upon if requested by the police.”

“This collaborative effort between the GAF and the GPS aims to maintain law and order during the elections while safeguarding the integrity of the process,” it stated.

The statement further urged all Ghanaians to exercise their civic rights responsibly and cooperate with security personnel.

Citizens were also advised to refrain from engaging in any activities that could disrupt the peace during the election period.

Reiterating its commitment to the stability and sovereignty of the nation, the GAF assured the public of its dedication to protecting the electoral process and fostering a peaceful atmosphere for the elections.
