The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a stern warning after discovering six University of Ghana (UG) Learning Centres operating without valid accreditation.
Certificates or qualifications obtained from these centres are deemed invalid for employment, further studies, or promotions.
In a statement released on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Dr. Emmanuel Oware Nyarko, Director of Quality Assurance and Compliance at GTEC, urged students, parents, and employers to exercise due diligence:
“Prospective students, parents, and employers should always verify the accreditation status of any tertiary institution or learning centre before enrolling or hiring,” he stated.
UG Learning Centres Flagged as Not Accredited
- Koforidua
- Cape Coast
- Tamale
- Ho/Tsito
- Wa
- Sunyani
GTEC also directed 11 other tertiary institutions to immediately halt new admissions until they meet full accreditation requirements. These include:
- Institute of Business Management and Journalism (Kumasi)
- Rural Development College (Kwaso)
- University College of Agriculture and Environmental Studies (Bunso)
- Kings and Queens Medical College (Akosombo)
- Springs College (Labone)
Additionally, 26 institutions—including Abbeam Institute of Technology (Kasoa), Lakeside University College (Accra), ILMA Institute of Science and Technology (Accra), Presbyterian Nurses’ Training College (Bawku), and Holy Spirit College of Education (Ho)—were cited for operating with expired institutional accreditation.
GTEC warned that studying in unaccredited institutions poses serious risks, including financial losses, wasted academic years, and compromised career prospects. The Commission said the announcement is part of ongoing efforts to safeguard the public, uphold educational standards, and curb disinformation and exploitation in the tertiary sector.
