Heavy-duty truck kills pupil, 2 others in critical condition at Aburaso

Aburaso, a community along the Bechem–Kumasi Highway, was thrown into mourning on Tuesday afternoon, October 28, after a heavy-duty truck loaded with lumber lost control and killed a pupil.

Information gathered by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicates that the deceased, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was returning home from school with two other pupils when the accident occurred around 2:00 p.m.

The two other pupils are said to be in critical condition.

An eyewitness, Mr. Evans Owusu, told the GNA in a telephone interview that the driver of the truck, with registration number GE 9901-11, lost control, causing the lumber to fall from the vehicle’s bucket and trap the children.

He said some young men in the area quickly mobilised to rescue the victims but discovered that one had already died. The two others were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

As of the time of filing this report, Mr. Owusu said the truck had blocked the Aburaso section of the highway, causing heavy vehicular traffic as vehicles from both directions were unable to move.

He added that several passengers were stranded, while the truck driver and his mate escaped unhurt and fled the scene.
