Jamaican Reggae Artiste KGenius Unites With Ghana
AS a Jamaican, Reggae artiste, KGenius, has always appreciated Ghana as the country of his ancestral roots.
So it was welcome news for him when the Year of Return was launched to welcome people of African descent to commemorate 400 years of the Slave Trade.
Even though he could not be part of the climax in December like he had envisaged, KGenius made sure to be in Ghana this month.
Apart from using the opportunity to learn more about the culture and traditions, the artiste, whose real name is Kirk Gammon, believes it is time to reunite with his African heritage.
He is, therefore promoting one of his works titled United, to awaken the spirit of unity among Black Africans all over the world.
Chatting with Graphic Showbiz recently, KGenius mentioned his plans to come back to the country to push his career.
“I will be going back to the US this month but will love to come back to Ghana and do my music. That is why I’m promoting United to get some attention for my music and brand.
“Also, the theme of United, which is a call on Africans to be united to resist foreign oppression, projects my music ambitions in the coming years and I intend to drum that home as I’m in the motherland now,” he stated.
With over 10 years of industry experience playing across the US and other countries since 2007, KGenius is fast becoming a highly sought after artiste on the Reggae circuit.
He cites his siblings as pivotal figures who shaped his love for music into what it is today by introducing him to the likes of Bob Marley, Kenny Rogers, Third World, Maxi Priest, and The Jackson 5 among others.
His debut EP, titled Disclosure was released in 2010 and he followed it up with Deeply Rooted. Deeply Rooted features appearances by Skelly (from Israel Vibration) and Meta Dia (from Meta and The Cornerstones).
KGenius has notably toured with Ya Kid K (Technotronic) across the USA, Puerto Rico and Canada, as both an opening act and a backup dancer. He recently played at Bard College alongside his 8-piece band.
Other names he has performed alongside include Third World, I-Octane, Flex Crew, Mutabaruka, Tasha T, Sister Nancy, and ‘Mbalax Super Star’ Titi from Senegal.
