Mfantsipim School beat Augusco with one point to win 2024 NSMQ

Mfantsipim School in Cape Coast made it a reality with the slogan, host and win when it pipped St Augustine’s College by one point to win the 2024 edition of the coveted National Science and Maths quiz (NSMQ) title in Cape Coast on Wednesday.

With how the contest went it was obvious the title would stay in Cape Coast.

Mfantsipim school was in second place closely following St Augustine’s College until the last lap when it answered one riddle correctly to bag 47 points leaving St Augustine’s College with 46 points to win the coveted trophy.

Mfantsipim School took home the 2024 NSMQ trophy, over GH¢70, 000 cash, other goodies and the bragging rights.

St Augustine’s College took the second place with 46 points and took home GH¢50,000 cash and other goodies with Keta SHTS finishing with 32 points at third place and taking over GH¢35,000 in cash and other goodies.

It was a rollercoaster of emotions for both contestants and supporters.

It was like anticipated, tension filled as the three teams of the NSMQ clashed for the coveted “NSMQ title holders” in the citadel of education, Cape Coast.

At the end of the first round, Keta Senior High Technical School had 13 points behind Mfantsipim and St Augustine’s who had 24 points each.

The second round ended with Keta SHTS having 12 points with Mfantsipim ending with 31 points and St Augustine’s having 34 points.

At the end of round three, Keta had 16 points with Mfantsipim bagging 34 and St Augustine’s having 39 points 

St Augustine’s ended round four with 46 points with Mfantsipim following closely with 44 points and Keta with 26 points.

Then the round five, the riddle round was what made the difference for the teams.

Mfantsipim answered one riddle correctly, taking three points to bag 47 points at the final round.

It was a tense contest at every lap.
 
The three schools, Mfantsipim School, Keta Senior High Technical and St Augustine’s College showed they were ready for the grand finale in the fiercely contested finale.

History of NSMQ

The NSMQ, launched in 1993 by Primetime Limited, has grown into Ghana’s most celebrated academic competition, aimed at inspiring interest in science and maths among senior high school students. 

Starting as a televised quiz contest in Accra, the NSMQ quickly became a national favourite for its challenging questions and thrilling matchups between top schools. 

Over the years, it has encouraged academic excellence and inspired students to pursue STEM careers, fostering friendly rivalries and strong alumni support across the country.

This year, a record-breaking 157 schools are competing, with 126 battling it out in the preliminary stage. 

In a historic move, the 2024 competition has shifted to Cape Coast, a city known for its longstanding educational legacy.

This relocation allows more regional audiences to experience the excitement firsthand, as Ghana’s brightest students showcase their knowledge and skills on a grand stage. 

The NSMQ continues to inspire future generations of scientists and mathematicians across Ghana.
