My Grammy Nomination Opened The Door For More Ghanaian Nominations – Rocky Dawuni
Ghanaian reggae artiste, Rocky Dawuni says his 2015 Grammy nomination opened the door for Ghanaian artistes to receive more nominations and also to go on to win.
According to the reggae artiste, the nomination was not self-serving but also a tribute to the legends in Ghanaian music he understudied as a young artistse.
He was speaking in an interview with Prince Benjamin on the Class Drive on Class91.3FM on Thursday, 18 June 2020.
The ‘In Ghana’ hitmaker said: “Even when I was nominated, the statement I made on the red carpet when they asked me, I told them that my nomination was a testament to all the great artistes I learned from, upon whose footsteps I learned from, upon whose footsteps I learned from – the Ampadus and all of those Ghanaian legends, whose music when I was a child I was learning, cutting my chops and all of that kind of stuff.
“The tribute was to them because that was where I learned from and acquired a lot of different ideas and moved forward. So, it’s not a nomination that was self-serving for me, it’s a nomination for all of us, it’s opened the door. Other people can go get more nominations and win. It’s open but the only thing people have to know is that we’ve opened the door and that’s a very important thing.”
Rocky Dawuni is currently promoting his new song titled ‘Beats of Zion’ which is enjoying airplay on Black Entertainment Television (BET) and Voice of America (VOA).
