Nine Out Of 50 Arrested By Operation Vanguard To Be Arraigned
Nine out of the 50 persons arrested by the government’s anti-Galamsey Task-force, Operation Vanguard are expected to be put before court today.
Over the weekend, the Operation Vanguard team arrested about 50 persons in the Western and Eastern Regions for their alleged involvement in illegal mining.
The 50 included 16 Chinese nationals, 22 Guineans and three Burkinabes.
The Public Relations Officer for Operation Vanguard, Captain Andy Sowatey said the nine Ghanaians will appear before the court at Kibi in the Eastern Region.
The arrests were effected in two separate operations in the Western and Eastern regions over the past week.
While locals have been handed over to the police for possible prosecution, the foreign nationals, as well as excavators that were confiscated, have been handed over to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining for action to be taken.
The Operation Vanguard team has however bemoaned the support of some local residents in harbouring illegal miners which it says hampers its operations.
Another action in the Central region has led to the destruction of ninety-four changfan machines used for the mining.
