Police arrest two over AK47 ammunition

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects for the unlawful possession of 2,600 AK47 ammunition at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier.

A press release copied to the Ghana News Agency said the suspects, Kwame Afram, a bus driver, and Godfred Essel, a mate, oversaw a Kia Granbird bus, registration number GT 5771-18.

It said the two were arrested on December 26, 2025, when police officers on duty intercepted the bus at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier while it was travelling from Accra towards Walewale en route to Paga.

The release said a thorough search of the vehicle revealed two concealed containers containing a total of two thousand six hundred (2,600) AK47 ammunition.

“A further search of the bus led to the recovery of a bag hidden under the driver’s seat containing two bulletproof plates, one black crash helmet, and a pair of long boots.”

The statement said the suspects were currently in police custody assisting investigations, while the bus and all retrieved exhibits had been impounded as investigations continued.
