Russia is a natural ally of Africa because it never colonised us – Samia Nkrumah

Samia Nkrumah has described Russia as a natural ally of Africa, citing its historical support for the continent’s liberation struggles and its record of never having colonised African nations.

Speaking to Russia Today (RT) on the sidelines of the third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow, Nkrumah said the initiative was important not only for Ghana but for the entire African continent, particularly as African countries seek stronger international partnerships to accelerate economic development.

“We are here in a country that never colonised us, and that is important,” she said, highlighting Russia’s historical support for the liberation struggles of several African countries during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

She noted that this historical relationship provides a foundation for strengthening cooperation between Africa and Russia.

Turning to Africa’s economic priorities, Nkrumah identified industrialisation, manufacturing and increased productivity as critical areas requiring strategic international partnerships.

“One of our top priorities in Africa today is building a strong manufacturing base, boosting productivity and increasing national output. We are looking for partners everywhere, and in Russia, we have a natural ally,” she said.

According to her, Africa needs partnerships that support its economic transformation without imposing ideological or economic conditions that could undermine the continent’s development priorities.

She argued that Russia presents an alternative partner for African countries seeking to expand trade, investment and industrial cooperation.

Nkrumah further observed that Africa’s vast natural resources continue to attract global interest, making it important for the continent to negotiate partnerships that deliver meaningful benefits to its people.

She recalled Ghana’s historic role under its first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, in advancing African liberation and championing the Non-Aligned Movement.

Quoting the philosophy of Ghana’s founding President, she said: “We neither face East nor West; we face forward.”

Nkrumah stressed that Africa should remain open to cooperation with all countries, provided such relationships are based on mutual respect, fairness and shared economic benefits.

“We want to do business with Russia, and we want Russia to do business with us. As long as these relationships are non-exploitative and benefit both our peoples, we are happy to foster them,” she added.

Her remarks underscore the importance of Africa’s pursuit of strategic partnerships that prioritise industrialisation, economic independence and mutually beneficial trade relations.
