Valentine’s Day gathers momentum as traders enjoy high sales in Sunyani

The Valentine’s Day celebration has gathered momentum in Sunyani, with rising demand and strong sales of Valentine gifts across the Bono Regional capital.

During market rounds on Friday, the eve of the celebration, a Ghana News Agency (GNA) survey observed scores of shoppers busily bargaining for items. Traders, especially those around the COCOBOD edifice in the Central Business District (CBD), had stocked their shops with a variety of gift items.

The traders told the GNA that sales had been encouraging, with high demand for teddy bears, diaries, flowers, watches, nightwear, beads, toffees and chocolates.

“Comparatively, my sales look promising this season,” Madam Hannah Agyarko, a trader, stated.

She, however, added that some customers only engaged in window shopping.

She indicated that prices of Valentine gifts were generally affordable, ranging between GHC10 and GHC700.

A bar of chocolate was selling at GHC35, while various types of flowers were priced at GHC10. Teddy bears ranged between GHC300 and GHC700.

Meanwhile, some customers expressed concern about what they described as high prices of chocolate, appealing to COCOBOD to increase production and help stabilise the price.

“It’s painful that some traders have taken advantage of the season to sell chocolates at inflated prices,” Madam Grace Adusei, a concerned customer, lamented.

Despite the concerns, she said she would still purchase some chocolates to express love and affection to family and friends.

She, however, found it worrying that some “parents can’t afford to buy a simple bar of chocolate for their children due to the high price.”
