Why Okyeame Kwame’s Parents Didn’t Bless His Marriage
Renowned rapper, Okyeame Kwame has revealed that he defied his parents’ religious reservations just to marry the ‘woman of his dreams’.
Shedding light on the hurdles he and his wife, Annica Nsiah-Apau faced when their love clashed with their family’s religious beliefs, he said his parents strongly disapproved of his union with Annica, just because she was Jehovah’s Witness.
The Faithful artiste disclosed that his family was hesitant to welcome his wife into the family because of their religious differences.
The father of two said it was more important for him to be with the woman he loved than to succumb to his family’s expectations, adding that he believed the success of a marriage was dependent on the blessings of God and not human approval.
“They [parents] never agreed to our marriage. We were going to play a show in Kumasi by then and she was working in a law firm. When we got to Nkawkaw, she [Okyeame Kwame’s wife] said, ‘Okyeame, do you know that in Ghana we have three key elements in marriage? We have an ordinance, customary, Mohammedan, and another one. So with the people who don’t support our marriage, will they come and live with us?’ Then I said ‘No,'” Okyeame Kwame explained during an interview with Angel FM.
Okyeame Kwame also disclosed that he informed his parents about the impending marriage just one night before the ceremony and their marriage did not receive the blessing of his parents.
“Both families loved each other, but because of religion, they didn’t agree. I told my mum about the marriage a night before the marriage because I understood that I was not going to marry the lady for my mother but for myself,” Okyeame Kwame emphasised.
He also highlighted the practical aspect, questioning the need for his mother’s approval in a marriage where they wouldn’t live together.
Okyeame Kwame and Annica Nsiah-Appau exchanged their vows in 2009 and have been blessed with two children.
