Police seek diplomatic assistance to contact US woman who alleged kidnapping by officers

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed it is working through diplomatic channels to secure the cooperation of an American woman who posted a viral video claiming she was kidnapped and robbed by individuals she alleged were police officers.

In a press release issued on Monday, December 9, 2025, the police said their investigation into Arianna Naomi Mackey’s claims has faced several challenges.

Preliminary checks by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) revealed that Mackey had already checked out of an Accra hotel and left Ghana on December 5 via Kotoka International Airport, the same day she posted the video.

“Police subsequently contacted the alleged victim to assist with the investigation. She indicated that she was out of the country and could not provide the names of the alleged officers or the number plate of the vehicle involved,” the release stated.

Authorities say their efforts have been further hampered as Mackey deleted the video, declined follow-up messages, and blocked investigators on WhatsApp. She also reportedly refused to provide the contact details of a Ghanaian friend who was with her, citing the friend’s unwillingness to be involved.

“The Ghana Police Service treats such allegations very seriously and remains committed to uncovering the facts in this case,” the release emphasised, signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, the CID Public Relations Officer.

Allegations of misconduct by individuals in police uniform, particularly at checkpoints, have been a recurring concern in Ghana. The police say their investigation is ongoing as they continue to pursue cooperation through official and diplomatic channels.
