Ghana tourism receives digital boost from IShowSpeed visit

Global YouTuber IShowSpeed’s recent tour of Ghana has underscored the growing power of digital influence in driving tourism, the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has said.

The American streamer visited Ghana on Monday, January 26, as part of his Africa tour, generating massive online engagement as millions of viewers tuned in to his live streams to experience the country’s culture, heritage and everyday life through his lens.

According to the GTA, the visit was strategically leveraged to promote Ghana’s tourism offerings to a global audience, particularly a young, digitally native audience.

Through IShowSpeed’s content, Ghana’s vibrant culture, scenic destinations and rich history were showcased in an authentic and relatable way.

Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, Maame Afua Houadjeto, said the tour demonstrated, in real time, how culture and digital influence can reshape perceptions and expand Ghana’s tourism reach.

“In one moment, millions of young people around the world saw Ghana as vibrant, welcoming and full of energy. This is the new face of tourism—authentic, youth-driven and global, and Ghana is ready for it,” she said.

She noted that beyond boosting tourism, IShowSpeed’s visit also helped counter long-standing negative narratives about Africa by highlighting Ghana’s modernity, hospitality and cultural depth.

During his tour, the YouTuber visited several locations that showcase Ghana’s tourism appeal, including the Asenema Waterfall in Okere district, Independence Square in Accra, where he drew crowds to the Black Star Monument, and the Bukom Boxing Arena, celebrating the country’s rich sporting heritage.

He also had culinary experiences, including sampling Ghanaian jollof rice live on stream.

IShowSpeed’s warm reception, capped by a traditional naming ceremony in Okere District, Eastern Region, sparked widespread online conversations about the influence of digital creators in shaping global perceptions and driving tourism growth.

Ms Houadjeto said the Authority intends to build on the momentum created by the visit to attract more tourists and investors, while continuing to highlight Ghana’s unique cultural and natural attractions.

“The GTA is already doing a lot, and we will continue to capitalise on opportunities like this to position Ghana as a must-visit destination,” she added.
