Queiroz targets AFCON success, 2030 World Cup dream after Black Stars reappointment

Reappointed Black Stars Head Coach Carlos Queiroz has pledged to build a stronger and more competitive Ghana national team, describing the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers as a crucial step. 

Following the confirmation of his reappointment by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the experienced Portuguese trainer said he was honoured to continue serving one of Africa’s most celebrated football nations. 

“It is with immense pride and honour that I confirm my continuation as Head Coach of the Black Stars of Ghana,” Queiroz posted on his official Facebook account. 

“Serving Ghana is far more than coaching a football team. It is a privilege, a responsibility and a mission to honour one of Africa’s greatest football nations and its incredible and passionate football people,” he added. 

Queiroz reflected on Ghana’s campaign at the recently concluded FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars advanced to the Round of 32, and commended the players, technical staff, and football authorities for their efforts. 

“I am proud of what our players, staff and Federation achieved together under challenging circumstances at the 2026 World Cup final competition. 

“Their courage, discipline and commitment restored belief, competitiveness and the pride of a nation,” he said. 

Looking ahead, the former Portugese national team coach said 2027 AFCON would be the team’s next focus as they seek qualification to the showpiece to be hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. 

“The Africa Cup of Nations is much more than our next destination. It is the golden gateway to building the Black Stars that will shine and proudly compete at the 2030 FIFA World Cup,” he said. 

Queiroz outlined an ambitious vision centered on continuous improvement, national unity and a winning mentality. 

“Our ambition is clear: improve every day, unite the nation, make Ghana stronger and fight for every victory with passion, humility and pride,” he said. 

The coach rallied supporters behind the national team, declaring: “One Team. One Nation. 35 million Hearts. One Heartbeat. The mission continues.” 

Ghana would begin its 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign with an away match against Ivory Coast on September 24 before hosting Gambia in Accra three days later.
