Nkrumah Park proposes Independence Declaration image for selected Ghanaian banknotes

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has proposed replacing the image of the Big Six on selected Ghanaian banknotes with the iconic photograph of Dr Kwame Nkrumah declaring Ghana’s independence in 1957.

The proposal, contained in a press statement issued and signed by Mr Collins Rawlings Nunyonameh, Acting Executive Director of the Park, is in line with the proposed Heritage Series of banknotes.

The statement said although the contributions of the Big Six to Ghana’s independence struggle remained historically significant and deserved lasting recognition, there was an opportunity to broaden the historical representation on the country’s national currency.

It noted that the image of the Big Six currently featured on almost all Ghanaian banknotes and called for the inclusion of other defining moments in the country’s history.

The statement described currency as more than a medium of exchange, saying banknotes were important vehicles for showcasing a nation’s identity, heritage and history.

“Banknotes serve as enduring symbols of national pride and collective memory, making their imagery an important part of how a country represents its history,” it added.

It said the proposal to feature the Independence Declaration photograph on selected denominations was consistent with the Bank of Ghana’s proposed Heritage Series.

The series, it said, presented an opportunity to celebrate significant personalities, events and milestones in Ghana’s national history.

The statement explained that the photograph captured the culmination of Ghana’s independence struggle and the historic moment the country broke free from colonial rule.

It said the image represented a defining turning point in Ghana’s history and a landmark in the wider African liberation struggle, symbolising freedom, sovereignty and national identity.

The Park said featuring the iconic photograph on selected banknotes would serve as a fitting and enduring tribute as Ghana prepared to commemorate the 70th anniversary of its independence in 2027.

“Our currency should not merely facilitate transactions; it should tell our national story. And there is no story more fundamental to modern Ghana than the moment we became free,” the statement said.
