Are award shows now about fashion?-Lydia Forson asks

Ghanaian actress Lydia Forson has sparked fresh conversation about the evolving nature of award ceremonies, questioning whether some of these events are gradually shifting focus from art to fashion.

In a thoughtful post, the award-winning actress said that while she appreciates fashion and enjoys red carpet moments, award shows should primarily celebrate artistic work rather than style.

“Speaking purely as an artist, I think we need to have an honest conversation about whether some of these events are award shows or fashion events,” she stated.

Forson emphasized that her main reason for attending such events is the creative work itself. “When I attend an awards show, I’m there first because of the work. Because of film. Because of music. Because of the art,” she wrote, adding that the red carpet should complement the main event and not overshadow it.

She expressed concern that increasing attention is being placed on fashion rather than achievements within the industry. “Lately, it feels like more conversation happens around outfits than the actual winners, performances, projects, or progress within the industry itself,” she noted.

The actress also pointed out the growing pressure on creatives to deliver standout fashion moments in addition to their professional recognition. “From an artist’s perspective, it becomes exhausting… now there’s the added burden of needing to deliver a viral fashion moment too,” she said.

While acknowledging her love for fashion, Forson suggested that if the industry wants fashion-driven events, they should be created intentionally. “If we want fashion-centered events, then let’s create them intentionally… But award shows should still remember to center the artists and the work because without the films, the music, the performances, there is no carpet to begin with.”
