Homes submerged, properties destroyed after 10-hour downpour in Ada

Residents in parts of the Ada East and Ada West Districts have been displaced, and properties destroyed following a nearly 10-hour downpour that hit the area over the weekend.

The heavy rains, which began around 21:00 hours on Saturday and ended at about 07:00 hours on Sunday, caused widespread flooding in several communities.

At Luhuor in the Ada West District, residents were forced to flee their homes after large sections of the community were submerged, with household items seen floating in floodwaters.

In Kasseh, in the Ada East District, homes were also inundated, compelling some residents to carry their children through the floodwaters to safer locations.

Some affected residents told the media that the situation was dire, as water entered their rooms in the middle of the night, forcing them to seek refuge outdoors.

“I had to stand with my children on my shoulders until daybreak,” Mercy, a resident of Kasseh, recounted.

Another resident, Mr Amanartey Kuabi, attributed the flooding to inadequate drainage systems, noting that existing gutters were too small to contain the volume of rainwater.

Other residents also cited choked gutters as a contributing factor, despite several community-led clean-up exercises carried out prior to the rains.

Communities including Azizanya, Kajanya, Madagbe, Ajumanikorpe and surrounding areas were also affected.

Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in both districts visited some of the affected communities to assess the situation.

More details are expected as authorities continue to evaluate the extent of damage and support affected residents.

Mr Ebenezer Tetteh Kpodo, Assembly Member for the Kasseh Electoral Area, noted that about three buildings collapsed but no casualties were recorded.

He stated that he was liaising with the authorities to work on the situation.
