Police seize bus with 1,050 rounds; driver, mate held

A driver and his mate have been arrested and detained by the Police after a fertilizer sack load of 1,050 ammunition was found on their bus. 

Mohammed Gzali. 42, the driver and Mohammed Jabir, 22, were nabbed at Kantanso-Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region whiles traveling from Accra to Tamale en route to Savulegu. 

In a Police release, Gzali is said to have told the police that the sack containing 1,050 AAA and BB cartridge ammunition were brought to the station by an unknown person as a parcel to be delivered to someone known as Oboye in Tamale. 

The release said on Tuesday January 6, 2026, at about 1900 hours, officers on duty at the Kantanso-Asankare Police Barrier intercepted a Kia Granbird bus with registration number AK 1309–21. 

It said the bus was driven by Gzali and his mate Jabir, with 45 passengers on board. 

The release said during the routine check, officers became suspicious that the driver might be conveying incriminating items.

“The Divisional Commander was immediately informed, and he subsequently arrived at the scene together with the Juaso District Commander and the Juaso District Crime Officer. Upon their arrival, an extensive search of the vehicle was conducted,” it said. 

During the search, a fertilizer sack was opened and found to contain 1,050) AAA and BB cartridge ammunition. 

“When questioned, the driver stated that the sack and its contents were brought to the station by an unknown person as a parcel, to be delivered to a person known as Oboye in Tamale,” the release said. 

It said the bus had been impounded, and the ammunition was retained as exhibits while the suspects are currently in police custody assisting with ongoing investigations.
