Castrate rapists, jail time not enough – Efya

Award-winning Ghanaian singer Efya is calling for rapists to be castrated, saying harsh punishment is the only way to curb the rising cases of sexual abuse in the country.

Speaking in an interview on BBC Pidgin, monitored by Graphic Showbiz, the Super Super hitmaker expressed deep frustration with how rape cases are handled in Ghana.

According to her, the justice system is often too lenient, allowing suspects to secure bail and return to society, a situation she believes emboldens offenders rather than deters them.

The songstress believes drastic measures must be considered if society truly wants to protect victims and discourage repeat offences. She stressed that rape is a life-altering crime whose impact on victims is often ignored once perpetrators are granted bail or handed what she described as “soft punishments.”

“We for find some drastic punishment for pipo wey dey abuse, harass and rape pipo. Sometimes these suspects fi get bail wey dem go still dey out dey continue to abuse odas. E never dey stop dem. I still dey talk say dem for castrate rapists for our society,” she said.

Beyond the castration debate, Efya also touched on other social issues during the interview, including online bullying. She said she has learned to ignore negativity on social media, noting that hateful comments neither bring her peace nor put money in her pocket. She maintained that people who thrive on spreading negativity eventually face the consequences of their actions.

Touching on the difficulties women face in the music industry, the singer says it is a male-dominated space which makes it difficult for women to thrive.

“If you be girl for this industry, it’s not gonna be easy at all. Because the boys chow pass the girls.”

Efya, who has been in the industry for over 15 years in the industry, believes female artistes must support each other. “So, if any of the girls, they do anything, me, I make sure say I back them up, I support them.”

Confidence is a major struggle for young female artistes. Sometimes, e be the confidence wey the girls no get, that be why dey no dey feel pushed like that. If I make sure that they sing, because that be what they make me happy, I go feel sing, then I go make happy again.”
