Heavy rains, storm activity expected across parts of Ghana – GMet warns

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a fresh impact-based weather warning forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall and possible storm activity across several parts of the country, particularly within the coastal, middle and transition belts.

According to the agency, a dense band of rain clouds has already engulfed inland sections of the coastal sector and parts of the forest zone, creating conditions likely to trigger widespread rainfall in the Eastern, Greater Accra, Western and Central regions.

GMet warned that some communities could experience isolated heavy downpours as the weather system intensifies over southern Ghana.

In its latest advisory issued on May 17, 2026, the agency explained that an additional storm system developing along the southern border between Ghana and Togo, with much of it advancing from southern Benin, was expected to worsen weather conditions across many areas later in the day.

The agency said the storm system was likely to generate moderate to heavy rains across most places within the coastal, middle and transition sectors of the country.

Areas expected to be affected between 1700 UTC and 2200 UTC include Ho, Kpando, Akatsi, Anloga, Tema, Accra, Dodowa, Aburi, Koforidua, Akosombo, Akuse, Kete Krachi and Donkorkrom.

GMet also projected unstable weather conditions for Winneba, Twifo Praso, Elmina, Cape Coast, Akim Oda, Assin Fosu and Assin Bereku later in the evening.

The weather agency further indicated that Kumasi, Obuasi, Ejura, Sefwi Wiawso, Sefwi Bekwai and New Edubiase could experience stormy conditions extending into midnight.

Under its impact-based forecasting matrix, some of the affected areas were classified under “Take Action” and “Be Prepared” risk categories, signalling the possibility of significant weather impacts if conditions worsen.

GMet cautioned that strong winds could precede the movement of the storms and advised the public, particularly residents in flood-prone communities and motorists, to take precautionary measures and remain vigilant.

The latest alert forms part of GMet’s impact-based forecasting system, designed to assess both the likelihood and severity of weather events to support public safety, emergency response and disaster preparedness as the rainy season intensifies across the country.
