Adipa landfill site: River Doboro pollution kills 500 crates of fish at Hebron fish farm

An estimated 500 crates of fish at the Hebron Fish Farm in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality of the Eastern Region have died following the pollution of the River Doboro by industrial waste from Nsawam and waste transferred from Agbogbloshie to Adipa, according to the farm operators.

Speaking to the media, the farm manager, Stephen Atiga, said the pollution had not only killed the fish but had also affected water used by residents in the community for domestic purposes.

Mr. Atiga said tonnes of fish feed purchased at a cost of GH¢154,300 had also been rendered unusable, resulting in significant financial losses for the farm.

He explained that the pollution had created serious challenges for the farm, which depends on the River Doboro for its fish production.

Mr. Atiga appealed to the relevant authorities to investigate the source of the pollution and take urgent steps to prevent further contamination of the river.

He also called for measures to protect the river and the livelihoods of farmers and residents who depend on it.

Meanwhile, some workers at the Hebron Fish Farm have expressed concern over the situation.

According to the workers, waste from industries in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality, as well as waste transferred from Agbogbloshie to Adipa, had polluted the river and contributed to the death of fish at the farm.

They have therefore called on the authorities to act quickly to stop the pollution and protect the River Doboro and communities that depend on it.
