Five dead in Cape Coast-Takoradi highway accident

Five people have died in a road accident that occurred on Saturday afternoon, at Ayensudo on the Cape Coast-Takoradi Highway.

Divisional Officer II Abdul Wasiu Hudu, the Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), told the Ghana News Agency that the Service received a distress call at 09:26 hours.

He said its rescue team from the Komenda Fire Station was quickly dispatched to the scene but upon their arrival, the crew found five lifeless, partially mutilated bodies trapped inside a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number GW-9873-22, that had veered off the road into bushes.

He said the team cordoned off the area, extricated the bodies and handed them over to the Ghana Police Service, who were also on the site.

The Fire Officer said an eyewitness reported that the Toyota Hiace bus, heading from Accra to Takoradi, in tried to overtake another vehicle, lost control and collided with the side of a DAF truck with the registration number GG-3227-25 travelling from Takoradi to Cape Coast.

He said five other persons were injured and taken to Cape Coast Teaching Hospital by the National Ambulance Service, but three of the passengers escaped unhurt.

DOII Hudu said the crash led to a brief traffic jam, but the crew was able to quickly clear the debris and restored vehicular flow.
