IGP Special Operations Team arrests 192 suspects in nationwide anti-crime operations

The Ghana Police Service’s IGP Special Operations Team has arrested 192 suspects during a series of intelligence-led operations across parts of the country, recovering suspected narcotic drugs, firearms, ammunition, and other exhibits.

The operations, conducted between October 2 and 29, targeted several communities, including New Town, Dansoman, Weija, Tudu, James Town, Shukura, Okaishie, Lapaz, Chantan, Odawna, Teshie, Avenor and Fadama.

According to the Police, the exercises were aimed at clamping down on suspected criminal activities, particularly drug-related offences, in the affected areas.

One of the biggest operations took place at Teshie on October 22, where 102 suspects, comprising 93 men and nine women, were arrested.

The operation also led to the recovery of quantities of compressed dried substances suspected to be narcotic drugs, seven bottles of nitrous oxide and a bottle of Benylin with Codeine.

Eight of the suspects, identified by the Police as key narcotics peddlers, were subsequently handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit for further investigations.

Another operation at Okaishie Drug Lane on October 9 led to the arrest of eight suspects.

Items recovered included quantities of substances suspected to be narcotic and unregulated pharmaceutical products such as Tramadol, Rohypnol and codeine-containing medicines.

The Special Operations Team also carried out operations at New Town, Dansoman, Weija, Tudu, James Town and Odawna, resulting in further arrests and the recovery of suspected narcotic substances, pharmaceutical products, processing equipment and other exhibits.

At Odawna, a 52-year-old businessman, Richard Polo, was arrested following surveillance by the Police.

The team reportedly recovered quantities of substances suspected to be cocaine and other narcotic drugs from his hideout.

Operations conducted at Fadama and Shukura on October 28 and 29 led to the arrest of two suspects identified as Douglas Kobby, 47, and Habib Yakubu.

The Police said the exercise resulted in the recovery of four parcels of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic substances, seven cartridges, a pump-action magazine, a dagger and a machete.

The recovery of the weapons and ammunition forms part of the exhibits being considered in the ongoing investigations.

In a separate operation at Alabonu in Asutuare, the team arrested three people suspected to be members of a vigilante group.

The suspects were subsequently handed over to the Tema Regional Police Command for further investigations.
