NPP begins expulsion process against Prof. Frimpong Boateng over “fake party” remarks

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Tuesday said it has initiated processes to expel Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, a former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, from the party.

This follows comments he made during a televised interview on Monday, in which he described the NPP as a “fake party” and declared that he no longer considered himself a member.

Professor Boateng, a founding member of the NPP and a respected academic and cardiothoracic surgeon, has in recent years been openly critical of the party’s leadership and direction, raising concerns about its governance process and internal democracy.

A statement signed by Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP General Secretary, copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the Party had taken “due notice of remarks made by the former Minister… during an interview on Channel One TV on Monday, January 12, 2026.”

It described the comments as damaging and contrary to its values.

The statement said Prof Frimpong Boateng also made “additional disparaging remarks” and alleged that the NPP’s 2023 presidential primary was rigged in favour of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who became the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 general election.

“The NPP vehemently rejects the claims,” it said, describing them as “baseless and unsubstantiated.”

The statement said the 2023 primary was conducted in a manner that reflected the will of its delegates.

“The said primary has been widely acknowledged by all candidates who participated, as well as by well-meaning members of the Party, as having been conducted in a free, fair, transparent, and credible manner,” it said.

It condemned Professor Boateng’s conduct, stating that his utterances were “highly reprehensible and inimical to the values, unity, and integrity of the Party.”

The statement added that such comments undermined internal cohesion and public confidence in the party’s democratic processes.

“Consequently, the Party has invoked the relevant provisions of its Constitution to commence the necessary processes to expel him from the Party, strictly in accordance with due process,” it said.
