Pregnant women warned against using unapproved medications

Pregnant women have been strongly advised to avoid taking over‑the‑counter drugs, herbal preparations, and other medications without first consulting qualified healthcare professionals.

Madam Anita Kwantrah, a registered nurse assistant at the Okanra Medical Centre in Tema, cautioned that the use of unapproved or unprescribed medications during pregnancy could pose serious risks to both mother and child. She explained that certain substances may interfere with the normal development of the foetus, particularly in the first trimester when vital organs are formed.

Kwantrah noted that unverified medications could disrupt organ development and increase the likelihood of complications. She further warned that some drugs, if misused, may reduce amniotic fluid levels—essential for protecting the baby and supporting healthy lung development.

She added that unregulated supplements, herbal remedies, and traditional preparations could also trigger uterine contractions or excessive bleeding, endangering both mother and baby. She emphasised the importance of pregnant women seeking medical attention whenever they have any health concerns. Madam Kwantrah advised expectant mothers to consult healthcare professionals before taking any medication. She also stressed the need to strictly follow prescribed treatments and attend regular antenatal care visits to ensure safe pregnancies and healthy outcomes.
