PWD farmer shines as Anloga District honours 12 at Farmers’ Day

A 31-year-old differently-abled farmer, Desmond Awute from Dosukope-Trekume has emerged as one of the standout honourees as the Anloga District Assembly marked the 41st National Farmers’ Day with awards to twelve distinguished farmers.

The ceremony held on Thursday, at the Dornorgbor E.P. School Park, Anloga aimed to recognise hardworking farmers for their roles in the District’s growth.

Mr Awute, who cultivates okro, pepper, maize, sugarcane and other crops, received the District’s Best Person with Disability (PWD) Farmer Award.

His prize package included a table-top refrigerator, two pairs of Wellington boots, cutlasses, two bags of fertiliser, and a certificate, a recognition that many described as both inspiring and well-deserved.

The annual awards ceremony, designed to acknowledge the contributions of farmers across the district, also celebrated outstanding individuals and farmer groups.

The overall Best District Farmer award went to 43-year-old Christian Baba Dumeda from Avume, Anloga who received a tricycle, cutlasses, fertiliser, Wellington boots, GTP cloth, a knapsack sprayer, and a certificate.

Mr Jacob Adukpo, 65, from Akplorfudzi, was named Best Livestock Farmer with the Farmer-based organisations and schools were also recognised.

Madam Sandra Seyram Kpedor, District Chief Executive of Anloga, who chaired the ceremony, praised the awardees and offered special encouragement to the PWD award winner.

“Desmond’s achievement is an inspiration. I want others in similar condition to see this as proof that farming remains a viable and rewarding venture,”

She urged the youth and women in the district to embrace agriculture as a pathway to economic growth.

Mr Franklin Agbove, District Director of Agriculure, speaking to Ghana News Agency, commended all farmers for their invaluable work, noting plans by the district to advance tomato farming through value addition.

“Our farmers keep the district alive and help sustain Ghana’s food system. We intend to begin processing tomatoes into puree to address the annual glut that affects our farmers.”

The ceremony was graced by traditional authorities, including Togbi Hatsu III of Dzita, political figures such as Mr Rolex Miheso, the Anlo Constituency Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress and several stakeholders from the security services and other agencies from the Anloga District Assembly.
