Kwahu Traditional Council sets record straight on alleged abduction of Queen Mother

The Kwahu Traditional Council has dismissed reports suggesting that the Paramount Queen Mother, Nana Adwoa Gyamfuah III, was abducted, calling the claims baseless and misleading.

In a statement released on Monday, November 17, the Council clarified that the Queen Mother was not taken away against her will. It explained that the incident arose from police officers acting on a directive issued by the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs.

The Council cited an interlocutory injunction dated June 24, 2024, in favour of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II. The order “restrains Baffour Osei Akoto, who has been styling himself as Kwahuhene, together with the Queen Mother and others, from interfering with Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II’s occupation and duties at the Abene Palace.”

To prevent tensions from escalating, the Ghana Police Service intervened “to secure the peace,” the Council stated, emphasising that the operation was a lawful enforcement of the court order, not an abduction.

The statement further clarified that the Queen Mother “does not reside at the Abene Palace, nor do any of the individuals who were arrested,” and insisted that rumours of her being seized were inaccurate.

The Council also alleged that the Queen Mother had aligned with individuals attempting to forcibly take control of the palace, noting that she “engaged thugs in an attempt to forcibly take over the Abene Palace and has issued threats intended to disrupt the legitimate work of the substantive Kwahuhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II.”

It reassured the public that all individuals detained during the police operation are unharmed, stating, “All persons arrested by the Police are currently in lawful custody and are safe and in good health.”
