Gospel is ministry, not showbiz – Amy Newman speaks out

VETERAN gospel musician Amy Newman may be thrilled about how Ghana’s gospel scene has evolved, but she’s far from pleased with how some of her colleagues have turned what she calls “a divine calling” into mere show business.

For Amy, gospel music should be more than catchy hooks and social media hype it should remain a sacred ministry that transforms lives.

In a candid chat with Graphic Showbiz on Saturday, November 1, the Okamafo hitmaker expressed concern that gospel music is being treated more as entertainment than ministry.

“These days, they call it an ‘industry,’ which means business. But for me, it’s a ‘ministry’ that’s where God has placed me,” she said.

“Some people now hype themselves and seek attention instead of focusing on the message and the calling.”

While Amy admits that the new generation is bringing refreshing energy and professionalism to gospel music, she believes the foundation must still be rooted in spirituality.

“What makes me happy is that many young artistes are now learning music formally. They’re building both their ministry and their craft. In our time, we relied mostly on anointing and grace, not on training. But now, this generation is combining musical knowledge with ministry and that’s beautiful.”

However, Amy worries that the growing similarity between gospel and secular music is blurring the lines between divine purpose and entertainment.

“We are different in our callings. The Bible says He gave to one five talents, to another two and to another one. Our work is God’s business. If we truly understand that, we wouldn’t rush to copy others,” she cautioned.

“Many artistes are following the crowd, trying to please people instead of God. That’s why the music is becoming more about entertaining rather than blessing the nation and the world.”

Touching on the ongoing debate about gospel artistes collaborating with secular musicians, Amy took a diplomatic stance. (Read Raise your own stars —Amy Newman to churches)

“It depends on the individual’s conviction. I won’t condemn anyone,” she said, adding that personally, the thought of doing such a collaboration has not crossed her mind.

Amy, who continues to minister actively, recently released a new album titled Adom Bi Agye Me on October 19 and revealed plans to drop another song during the Christmas season.

 “By God’s will, I will release another song in December for Christmas,” she said excitedly.
