UNOPS partners BuzzStopBoys to clean Osu Beach, marking its 10th anniversary

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) has partnered with youth-led environmental NGO BuzzstopBoys to clean the Osu Beach as part of activities marking its 10th anniversary in Ghana.

The exercise reflects UNOPS’ commitment to promoting clean and sustainable environmental practices that improve living conditions and protect natural ecosystems. Over the past decade, the organisation has consistently demonstrated dedication to building cleaner and more resilient communities—an effort aligned with its broader climate action agenda.

Since establishing its presence in Ghana in 2015, UNOPS has supported a range of national development priorities. Its portfolio includes strengthening public health systems, improving infrastructure planning, supporting climate adaptation, and enhancing governance and procurement systems.

Notable interventions include technical assistance for the Ministry of Health, capacity-building support to key public institutions, and infrastructure assessments aimed at improving service delivery in vulnerable communities.

UNOPS has delivered 24 projects worth US$35.3 million in Ghana. The country also hosts the UNOPS West Africa Multi-Country Office, co-founded with Senegal, which now covers 17 countries and oversees 66 development, humanitarian, and resilience-building projects across the subregion.

In 2020, UNOPS partnered with the Global Center on Adaptation, which mobilised EUR 500,000 to help Ghana identify its infrastructure adaptation needs and develop a roadmap to address climate vulnerabilities.

During the cleanup exercise, volunteers cleared the shoreline of accumulated plastics, debris, and other waste washed ashore, contributing to ongoing efforts to maintain a cleaner and healthier Accra coastline.

Speaking at the anniversary event, the Deputy Executive Director of UNOPS, Ms. Sonja Leighton-Kone, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to delivering practical, efficient, and cost-effective solutions for humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding initiatives worldwide.
