Three arrested over Obrachire student assault

Three arrested over Obrachire student assault

The Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the violent disturbances that marred the District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru.

The arrests follow a harrowing confrontation on Thursday, 19th February 2026, which left several students hospitalised and sent shockwaves through the regional academic community.

Breaking her silence on the matter during an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show on Monday, 23rd February 2026, the Regional Director, Dr Juliette Dufie Otami, revealed that security agencies are closing in on the perpetrators.

While the identities of those detained have not yet been made public, Dr Dufie Otami confirmed that the police had made significant progress over the weekend.

“About three people have been arrested as of yesterday. We are still investigating the matter,” she stated.

The investigation is expected to widen as authorities review amateur footage and eyewitness accounts to identify others who played a role in orchestrating the chaos.

In a significant relief to parents and school administrators, the Director-General confirmed that the medical emergency sparked by the violence has been resolved.

A student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School, who was reportedly the primary target of a brutal mob attack, is among those who have been given a clean bill of health.

“They have been discharged and they are okay; they have all been treated, and they have all been brought back to the schools, and they are okay now,” Dr Dufie Otami assured the public.

Eyewitness accounts from the Agona Swedru games paint a picture of total security failure. Tensions between rival student groups reportedly simmered throughout the day before exploding into a physical confrontation during the track events.

The most disturbing reports suggest a targeted assault on an Obrachire Senior High Technical School student, who was allegedly surrounded and attacked by a mob believed to be from the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS). Bystanders described a scene of terror as the victim was pelted with stones and struck repeatedly with wooden sticks before the intervention of onlookers managed to de-escalate the violence.

The incident has reignited a fierce debate regarding the safety of inter-school sporting events in Ghana. A viral video showing the bloodied victim surrounded by a frantic crowd has served as a catalyst for calls for reform.
