Jomoro will revive coconut business instead of engaging in galamsey – Paramount Chief 

Awulae Kwasi Amakyi III, Paramount Chief of the Western Nzema Traditional Area, has said Jomoro will not engage in illegal mining, popularly known as ‘galamsey’, but will rather revive the coconut industry to improve upon the living conditions of the people. 

He said the coconut business had been the economic backbone of the area and supported the education of many scholars who now hold enviable positions in and outside the country. 

Awulae Amakyi III was speaking at the Jomoro Development Conference held at Half-Assini in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region. 

The event, which formed part of activities to mark the first anniversary of his enstoolment as successor to Awulae Annor Adjaye III, was on the theme: “Recollect, Reflect and Refocus.” 

The conference focused on the history of Nzemaland, harnessing natural resource endowments for the development of the homeland, its people and heritage, and the Petroleum Hub Development Project as an economic gamechanger for the area. 

Awulae Amakyi III, who is also the President of the Western Nzema Traditional Council, said Jomoro needed coconut oil processing factories to add value to coconut production. 

He observed that the once vibrant coconut industry was a major source of employment and livelihoods for the people of Nzema. 

Mr Stephen Blay, Convener of the conference, said the event would bring together indigenes of Jomoro with the requisite experience, knowledge and technical expertise to contribute to the development roadmap of the area. 

He said Jomoro abounds in natural and human resources which needed to be tapped to fast-track its development. 

Mr Blay said the Petroleum Hub Development Project was high on the development agenda of Jomoro and would come on stream in full when the government pays compensation to affected farmers and landowners.
