Know cancer signs, seek early care – Ghana Health Service

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has urged the public to learn the signs and symptoms of cancer to support early detection and treatment.

Cancer refers to a group of more than 100 diseases marked by uncontrolled cell growth resulting from genetic mutations, which may form tumours and spread to other parts of the body.

In a statement to mark World Cancer Day, the GHS said awareness of symptoms, regular screening, healthy lifestyles and community support were essential to preventing the disease and reducing stigma.

The Service said common warning signs included unexplained weight loss, extreme fatigue, fever, persistent pain, skin changes such as darkening, yellowing or new moles, unusual bleeding or bruising, new lumps or thickening, and changes in bowel or bladder habits.

It said the commemoration served as a reminder that prevention and early detection could save lives.

“Many cancers can be treated successfully when detected early; therefore, we call on all Ghanaians to take action by knowing the signs and symptoms. Together, through community action, we can close the cancer care gap and protect the health of our nation,” the statement said.

World Cancer Day is observed annually on February 4 to raise awareness and promote cancer prevention, early detection and treatment.

This year’s observance is on the theme: “Closing the Cancer Care Gap: Community Action for Prevention and Early Detection in Ghana.”
