Police detain eight illegal miners

The Police have commended the Amomaso community in the Berekum West District of the Bono Region for their cooperation and support in stemming illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey”, in the area.

The commendation followed the police detention of eight persons who allegedly undertook an illegal mining activity in the Amomaso Forest in the area.

Suspects Atule Nathaniel, 23, Azusiwine Cletus, 22, Ayaama Thomas, 15, Asigiya Joseph, 23, Aboyinga Aselise, 37, Atanbire Reymond, 20, Isaac Ntim, 46, and Aguya Isaac, 25, years were arrested by some community members.

A statement issued by the police, and signed by Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, the Public Relations Officer of the Bono Regional police administration, urged the public to always provide the police with information about suspected illegal mining activities in the region.

It said the community members arrested the suspects on May 20, 2026, around 1600 hours, adding that they had since been remanded in police custody.

A copy of the statement made available to the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani explained that the Berekum Divisional Police Command received a distress phone call from a resident that the youth of Amomaso had apprehended the illegal miners.

The police personnel responded accordingly, proceeded to the town and found the suspects detained by the youth and recovered a pickaxe, four shovels, water pumping machine, and a woolen used for gold washing.
