Policeman involved in alleged ‘hit-and-run’ that killed Central University student Ivan Baidoo identified and interdicted

The policeman said to be involved in an alleged “hit-and-run” incident that resulted in the death of a Central University level 200 student, Ivan Baidoo has been identified and interdicted by the Police administration.

He has been named as General Corporal Robert Koranteng.

He was reportedly chasing a motorcycle rider with Ivan Baidoo as the pillion rider and it resulted in a crash that killed Baidoo.

The incident occurred on the Tema Motorway around the old toll booth area at the Accra end (East Legon) on August 27. 2026.

The Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) took over the investigation after a petition by the family to the CID, with the argument that, the case officer was being lackadaisical with the investigation and was not readily providing information to the family of the deceased even though, the motorbike rider was available.

In a statement issued Saturday (Sept 12, 2026) the police said there were more investigations underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, while the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) has been tasked with investigating the conduct of the officer.

“The Ghana Police Service assures the public that the matter is being thoroughly investigated and that appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigations,” the statement said.

The family of Ivan Apprey Baidoo petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for a full-scale investigation into the circumstances of his death in the motorbike crash.

Ivan, 20, was a second-year law student who died after an accident involving a motorbike on the Tema Motorway on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at about 4 p.m., according to the petition.

The lawyers said Ivan had ordered a ride and boarded the motorbike with registration number M 26-AB 384 from Old Ashongman to East Legon.

They said the rider, identified as Samuel Arthur Wesley, had informed police investigators at the Airport Police Station that a police patrol team member riding another motorbike had chased him from the UPSA-Legon junction towards the Tema Motorway.

According to the petition, the rider alleged that the patrol team member caught up with them and “hit them from the back of the motorbike,” causing both the rider and Ivan to fall to the ground.

The petition, dated September 7, 2026, was filed by the family’s lawyers, Nyamekye & Partners, on behalf of Ivan’s father, Evans Baidoo.

What happened?

Baidoo is said to have left home in Old Ashongman to play football with friends in East Legon and booked a motorcycle ride (registration M 26-AB 384).

The rider was Samuel Arthur Wesley.

According to the rider’s account (relayed by the family and in the petition to police), a police officer on another motorcycle began chasing them from the UPSA-Legon junction.

The pursuit continued toward the motorway (near the old toll booth area), where the officer allegedly hit or kicked the rear of the bike, causing both to fall. Ivan sustained fatal injuries (including head injuries, broken ribs, and internal bleeding) and died; the rider survived with lesser injuries.

A good Samaritan reportedly took them to Tema General Hospital. 

The family was notified when someone answered Ivan’s phone that evening.

The rider was initially charged with careless driving/negligently causing harm. 

The family raised concerns about the police presentation of post-mortem findings and petitioned the CID (via lawyers Nyamekye & Partners on behalf of father Evans Baidoo) for a full investigation.

They also offered a GH¢50,000 reward for credible information.
