Seven suspects arrested over deadly New Winneba attack

The Central Regional Police Command has arrested seven suspects in connection with the violent attack at New Winneba in the Central Region on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

The incident, which is believed to have originated from a land dispute, resulted in the deaths of three people and left 19 others injured.

According to the Police, the violence erupted at about 10:40 a.m. when a mob of about 300 people allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks stormed New Winneba Township.

The group, reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, allegedly attacked residents and vandalised shops, stores and properties belonging to natives of the area.

The Deputy Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Inspector Isaac Entie, confirmed the arrest of the seven suspects and said investigations were ongoing to identify and apprehend other persons believed to have participated in the attack.

About 15 injured victims, including a police officer, were initially transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical attention. Further information from the Police indicates that 19 people sustained various degrees of injuries.

Following the disturbances, personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further escalation.

The Inspector-General of Police also deployed a reinforcement team from the National Police Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles, to strengthen security operations in New Winneba.

The Police Command says the situation has been brought under control and has assured residents that security measures remain in place to maintain peace and order.
