Two killed, 14 injured following disturbances at Nchiraa Yam festival

Two people have been killed and 14 others injured following disturbances that erupted during the celebration of the Yam Festival at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region.

The incident occurred on Saturday, October 3, 2026, after the festival programme had ended, according to the Bono Regional Police Command.

In a press release issued on Monday, October 5, the Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the disturbances started at about 5:30 p.m. as Nana Tabiri Yaw III and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to his palace.

The Police said a gunshot was fired during the incident, resulting in multiple casualties.

Two people died, while 13 others, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment, the Police said.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The Wenchi Divisional Police Command has since intensified patrols in Nchiraa and restored calm in the area.

The Bono Regional Police Command has assured the public that efforts are underway to arrest anyone found to have been involved in the disturbances.

The Police have also urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
