Empowering women through African designs

Mrs Josephine Ofori, a Ghanaian fashion designer, says African wear is increasingly becoming a powerful medium through which women reconnect with their cultural heritage, challenge narrow beauty standards and assert their identity. 

Mrs Ofori explained that African designs not only celebrated colour and craftsmanship but also promoted diversity, dignity and confidence among women, while contributing to economic growth along the fashion value chain. 

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), she said her motivation as a designer was rooted in telling stories through fabric, noting that every piece she created was intended to inspire confidence and empower women to embrace their individuality. 

“I want my designs to inspire confidence and empower women, especially to embrace who they are, while projecting the beauty of African designs beyond the globe,” she said. 

She added that although there were many designers in Ghana and across Africa, her focus was to make her fabrics and designs distinct by combining quality craftsmanship with cultural expression rather than mass production. 

Her collections feature handcrafted pieces made from high-quality African fabrics, including Kente, known for its durability, breathability and rich symbolism. 

According to her, the intricate patterns and bold colours reflected African culture, values and belief systems. 

Mrs Ofori said her journey into fashion began at a very young age, when she used needle and thread to mend torn dresses during her childhood. 

She said her parents, recognising her talent, supported her by providing a sewing machine, which enabled her to begin designing outfits for her mother. 

She noted that sewing gradually became part of her life and identity, influencing her decision to build a fashion brand that supports women within her community and beyond. 

Now 39 years old, Mrs Ofori has turned her passion into a growing enterprise, paying close attention to detail and prioritising quality over quantity. 

She said her work was driven by the desire to see women dress decently while allowing their outfits to reflect their values and cultural pride. 

She expressed optimism that African fashion would continue to gain global relevance as more women use it as a tool for self-expression, empowerment and economic independence.
