Former President Kufuor urges renewed commitment to disability-inclusive society

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called on Ghanaians to reaffirm their commitment to building an inclusive society that respects the dignity and rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs).

In a goodwill message issued on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, ahead of the International Day of Persons with Disability (IDPD), Mr. Kufuor said this year’s theme, “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” aligns with Ghana’s ongoing efforts to promote equity and social inclusion.

He highlighted the passage of the Persons with Disability Act, 2006 (Act 715) during his tenure as a landmark step in protecting PWDs’ rights and strengthening Ghana’s compliance with both national and international standards.

Mr. Kufuor commended the resilience and contributions of PWDs across education, entrepreneurship, arts, science, sports, and public service, emphasizing that disability is not inability.

He, however, acknowledged that challenges remain, including barriers in accessibility, employment, healthcare, and persistent social stigma. He called for renewed national commitment to dismantle prejudice and ensure that policies effectively improve the lives of PWDs.

The former president encouraged all Ghanaians to use the occasion to intensify efforts toward building a more inclusive and equitable society.
