Govt to procure 500 new buses for Metro Mass Transit

The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced government plans to acquire 500 new buses to boost the operations of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) and enhance public transportation across Ghana.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, October 30, 2025, Mr. Nikpe described the move as part of the government’s broader efforts to modernise the nation’s transport system and drive economic transformation.

He revealed that the first batch of 150 buses is expected to arrive early next year, marking the beginning of the rollout.

Mr. Nikpe noted that Metro Mass Transit currently operates only 134 buses, a limitation that has affected its ability to expand routes, maintain services, and meet the growing demand for safe and affordable transport.

Responding to parliamentary questions, the minister said the procurement aligns with a wider government plan to modernise terminal infrastructure, improve service delivery, and create employment opportunities in the transport sector.

“Mr Speaker, I wish to announce to this House that the company is in the process of acquiring new buses—about 500 over the short to long term to augment our operations,” he stated.

“These buses will be deployed nationwide to optimise existing routes and establish new ones in underserved areas,” he added.

The minister further revealed that Metro Mass Transit is preparing to implement aspects of a 24-hour economy, starting with its vehicle maintenance and traffic management departments, to ensure buses remain operational and accessible to passengers around the clock.
