Police Inspector gets life sentence for shooting girlfriend in Kumasi

The Kumasi High Court has sentenced Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, also known as “Taacum,” to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, 26-year-old Victoria Dapaah, popularly known as Maadwoa.

The sentence was delivered on Friday, October 24, 2025, by Justice Rosemond Baah-Tosu, after a seven-member jury found the officer guilty by a 5–2 majority verdict.

Inspector Twumasi was convicted for shooting Maadwoa several times in the abdomen and chest at close range near her residence at Adum, Kumasi, on April 20, 2023.

Prosecutors said the killing followed a dispute over a GH¢5,000 debt that the police officer had reportedly demanded from the deceased. After she failed to repay the amount, he confronted her and shot her with his service rifle, killing her instantly.

The convict was arrested three days later at Sekyere, near Effiduase in the Ashanti Region, after a police manhunt.

Inspector Twumasi initially confessed to the shooting but claimed it was not intentional. He later pleaded not guilty, leading to a full trial that lasted nearly three years.

Family members of the deceased, who were present in court, expressed relief at the verdict, describing it as justice finally served.

The case, which attracted national attention, raised fresh concerns about police discipline and the misuse of state-issued weapons.
