Two suspects arrested over plot to assassinate chief of Akyem Kwabeng

Two suspects have been arrested by the Eastern South Regional Police Command for allegedly plotting to assassinate Daasebre Ayimadu Kantamanto II, Chief of Akyem Kwabeng and Gyasehene of Akyem Abuakwa State. They are Seth Butuakwa, 48, and Emelia Akua Asor 47.

A statement issued by the Ghana Police Service said Asor paid undercover officers an advanced fee of GHC50,000 for the planned assassination. The money has been retrieved by the Police.

The statement said on October 11, 2025, at about 10:00 hours, the Command received credible intelligence that some individuals were planning to eliminate the Chief ahead of his first Royal Durbar, scheduled for October 17, 2025, at Akyem Kwabeng.

Based on the information, on October 12, 2025, a team of officers from the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) was dispatched to infiltrate the group behind the plot.

During the covert operation, Asor, offered GH₵50,000 to the undercover officers to carry out the assassination of both the Chief and another woman alleged to be the newly appointed Queen Mother of Akyem Kwabeng, ahead of the durbar.

It said Asor further instructed suspect Butuakwa to accompany the officers to Akyem Kwabeng to identify the Chief and the woman’s residence. Butuakwa led the officers to both locations and also provided them with a photograph of the Chief.

The suspects promised to pay an additional GH₵50,000 after the successful execution of the crime.

Asor and Butuakwa have since been arrested and are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
