High Court orders extradition of Abu Trica to US over alleged $8-million romance scam

An Accra High Court has ordered the extradition of Frederick Kumi, also known as Abu Trica, to the United States to stand trial over his alleged involvement in an eight-million-dollar romance scam that reportedly targeted elderly victims.

Kumi was initially brought before the Gbese District Court following a request by the State for his extradition.

The court granted the request for him to be extradited to face charges of money laundering, conspiracy, and wire fraud in the United States.

His lawyer, Mr Oliver Barker-Vormawor, challenged the District Court’s decision. However, the High Court has now upheld the extradition order.

In a Facebook post, Mr Barker-Vormawor said he was outside the country on official duty when he learned that the case had been fast-tracked and that the court had ordered his client’s extradition.

“I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast-tracked and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1 – Abu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court,” he wrote.

Earlier, Kumi was granted bail in the sum of GH¢30 million with two sureties, who were required to justify the bond with landed property.

Since his arrest in December 2025, he has remained in custody.

Separately, Kumi, through his lawyers, initiated legal action against some security agencies, alleging violations of his fundamental human rights during his arrest.

He claimed that he was subjected to torture and degrading treatment, contrary to Article 15 of Ghana’s Constitution.

Following the High Court’s decision ordering his extradition, Kumi was rearrested.
