Police announce road closures in Accra for 69th Independence Day celebrations

Some major roads in Accra will be temporarily closed to traffic on Friday, March 6, as the country marks its 69th Independence Anniversary at the Jubilee House.

In a statement issued on Thursday, March 5, the Ghana Police Service said the restrictions are part of security and traffic management measures for the national celebration.

The Service stated that the affected roads include Liberation Road from the Opeibea Intersection towards the Central Business District, Independence Avenue at the Ako Adjei By-pass, and Jawaharlal Nehru Road.

The roads will be reopened to traffic after the ceremony.

“The Ghana Police Service wishes to inform the general public, particularly motorists, that some roads in Accra will be temporarily closed on Friday, 6th March 2026, in connection with the 69th Independence Anniversary Celebration to be held at the Jubilee House,” the statement said.

Motorists using Liberation Road have been advised to divert through Kaokudi Road via the Kanda Highway to connect to Barnes Road towards the Central Business District. Alternatively, drivers may use Giffard Road towards Osu.

The Police also announced that motorists travelling on Independence Avenue will be redirected through the Kanda Highway to Ring Road Central and proceed to the 37 Intersection and other destinations.

“No vehicle will be allowed to park at unauthorised places along the affected roads,” the Police cautioned, adding that security vehicles and vehicles conveying dignitaries will be granted access after undergoing thorough security checks.

Traffic officers will be deployed to direct motorists to designated car parks and diversion points, while towing vehicles will be on standby to remove abandoned, disabled or wrongly parked vehicles.

The Police Service is therefore urging motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time and cooperate with officers on duty to ensure smooth traffic management during the Independence Day celebrations.
